Near the middle of Lake Huron and Lake Michigan sits Mackinac Island. A tiny island where you feel like you have been lost in time. The sound of hooves as horses and carriages go by, the sound of the water as it hits the shore, and the abundance of ice cream and fudge shops all work to transport you to a time in the past.
Mackinac island banned all motor vehicles in 1898 when a “horseless carriage”frightened a team of horses. After that, no more motor vehicles were to be allowed on the island.

The island is now 80% forest. And there are currently only 400 residents on the island. In the summer, when all the tourists come in, there is a rush of new people and new activities to do. In the fall, when tourism is low, the island people celebrate fall and Halloween as a last big party before the winter chill sets in. There are pumpkins and mum flowers all over the island. It is really beautiful in the fall months.
For a sense of nostalgia and a sense of fall wonder, it’s worth it to check out Mackinac Island.
