As an American tourist, we are overwhelmed by constant social media posts about the best way to enjoy traveling in Paris, France. Always bombarded with pictures and videos of people sitting near the Eiffel Tower and enjoying a pastry. Or the classic, “Paris is for lovers and is the most romantic and popular city in the world you must visit!” But often times you get to Paris and experience a different side to this romantic city. Scams are everywhere, people are very rude and when they know you are a tourist they refuse to answer you. Your American GPS navigation system apparently doesn’t work well in France and nobody wants to help you out. You finally find a decent bakery, but the service is bad, and the waiters are rude if not downright mean. Yes, the art and architecture are amazing, but while in Paris, one must pay attention to the do’s and don’ts outlined below.

- Do say “Bonjour” every time.
- Don’t speak English right away.
- Do book restaurants in advance.
- Don’t expect American style dining service.
- Don’t over-tip.
- Dress well don’t wear shorts or American logo t-shirts and don’t wear flip flops!
- Do stay alert for scammers and pickpockets.
- Don’t customize your food order like the American way.
- Do use the metro and validate your ticket.
- Don’t eat at restaurants near famous locations.
- Do slow down and take time to enjoy the city.
- Don’t ignore the current U.S. government advisory for France.
